Chelsea boots have long been an essential part of the stylish man’s wardrobe. One of their great appeals is that they are perfect for both casual and formal and have a timeless elegance which means they are never out of fashion.

They are also popular with women and in fact, Queen Victoria was officially the first owner of a pair of Chelsea boots. Her bootmaker, J. Sparkes-Hall is credited with inventing the boot in 1837. His invention came to fruition following the development of vulcanised rubber. This gave him the idea of creating a boot with an elastic side that could be pulled on and off easily.

Sparkes-Hall filed a patent for his creation of the Chelsea boot in 1851 claiming, ‘She (Queen Victoria) walks in them daily and thus gives the strongest proof of the value she attaches to the invention’.

The appeal of the elastic sided boot continued to grow, firstly as footwear for riding horses but by the mid nineteenth century had become a must-have fashion accessory and this trend continued up to the beginning of the First World War in 1914.

The Chelsea boots real next show of prominence came during the 1960’s when the Mod culture arrived on the scene.  This was the time when young people had more money than ever and fashion became the order of the day with image conscious youngsters wearing tailored suits, driving their iconic scooters and wearing only the most fashionable footwear, Chelsea boots being the number one choice.

Experts of the 1960’s are unsure why Chelsea boots became so popular but it is believed that Italian and French culture played an influential part as well as the leather clad biker look in the USA. Many, understandably also think that The Beatles played a huge part. The most famous band of all time were often seen wearing them!

A lesser known fact about Chelsea boots is that they featured prominently in the massively successful Star Wars triology. The boots can be seen in all three of George Lucas’s films. Darth Vader is seen wearing them along with his stormtroopers.

However there was a slight modification made with the stormtroopers boots. They had to be stained white to fit in with their futuristic costumes.
